The BIGGEST Little Nonprofit
In Placer County
Who is Seniors First? Founded in 1971, Seniors First is a federally recognized social service nonprofit that provides several programs for elders and their families in our communities. The Auburn-based nonprofit provides services for around 1,000 seniors a month and is growing steadily. Yet, unless you have needed them, you may not have heard of them.
Most known for Meals on Wheels, Seniors First currently delivers over 400 hot meals per day. “It’s more than just meals,” says Senior Nutrition Manager Dawn Marie Pesola, “we provide daily interaction and help relieve food insecurity for our clients in other ways.” Daily interaction that has literally saved lives. “When a volunteer knocks on the door of a client we expect to be home and there’s no response, they know to look for signs that something might be wrong.” In fact, at the end of 2017 Meals on Wheels volunteers were able to get medical and fire assistance to at least 3 seniors- just in the nick of time.
Other programs include MyRides which provides volunteer transport for medical appointments, grocery shopping and other essential errands; Friendly Visitors in which volunteers are paired with a senior for ongoing socialization; Recreation & Respite, a day facility where seniors with cognitive and other impairments have a safe space enabling caregivers time for their own needs; Information & Assistance which provides resources for anything from affordable housing to affordable plumbers. I&A produces a printed Resource Guide which is distributed throughout the county, printed with seniors in mind. The guide is comprised of the most frequently requested resources seniors call in for.
Seniors First is always in need of volunteers and donations. If interested, please call the office at (530) 889-9500.
